Fourteen Year Old Girls, Middle Aged Men, and Drunk Hillbillies

Spent last night at Cricket Arena for the Alanis Morissette / Matchbox Twenty concert.

Love the window art. I hope that was done by a 14-year-old girl rather than a 41-year-old guy. There were plenty of both on hand. ...Which, I'm just realizing, is kinda creepy.
I didn't stick around for the whole show. Alanis (left), the opener, was the main draw and - after a long day at work - I had a priority to be in bed by midnight.
But I was around long enough for a couple Matchbox Twenty songs, including the opener, 'How Far We've Come.' (left)
More distracting than famous people on stage was the row of drunken people in front of me and the one beside me. The one beside me, who described herself as a grandmother, was so drunk she tried to scale the guard rail behind the row and took a nose dive onto the concrete. A trooper, she walked it off.

The row in front of me somewhat resembled this Hannah Barbara favorite. They had a tendency to stand frequently, both to remove their jackets and for beer runs.

Who goes to an Alanis / Matchbox Twenty concert to get drunk anyway? I'll tell you who. Alcholics.

The musical highlight was Alanis' 'Hands Clean' (which I had wiped from my memory over the past 5 years) and her parody of Fergie's 'My Humps' (seen below).

Random Stormtrooper Sightings

I was walking through uptown the other day, on my way to lunch, and came upon an empty building on Lafayette Street.

...With a Star Wars stormtrooper in the window...

Also noticed a sticker on a light post across the street with the same image.

Is the Uptown Shelby Association using the Empire to pretty up the neighborhood?

Honestly, I kinda preferred the lights in the trees. : )

Pop Music in Commercials

So I was driving into work this morning, relieved that it looked to be a relatively easy day to end the week, and started fiddling around with the iPod, trying to find that perfect song to fit the mood.

3,000 songs and it still takes me 10 minutes to flip through until I find something I like...

I stopped around 27 ... or 43.

Van Halen - Right Now

And that got me thinking - Remember when this was used for the short-lived Crystal Pepsi line (1992-93)?

And then it got me thinking some more - Wouldn't it be a fun Playlist idea to cover some hit songs that have been used in advertising campaigns?

For example...

Johnny Cash, “I’ve Been Everywhere” (Choice Hotels)
The Cars, “Just What I Needed” (Circuit City)
Scorpions, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” (TGI Fridays)
Robert Palmer, “Simply Irresistible” (Applebee’s)
Iggy Pop, “Lust for Life” (Royal Caribbean)

Thinking I might get this in for next week's Playlist if I can get some extra suggestions on what's worth including...

Woman Hit by Car in Uptown

Just got back from covering a pedestrian being hit by a car in uptown.

A witness said the driver of the vehicle involved did what she could but couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting a woman crossing the street at Warren and Lafayette.

Check back at shelbystar.com later this afternoon for more on the story.

"Game Over"

Some of the reporters, myself, and design editor Emily Killian met up for dinner last night which was followed soon thereafter by an impromptu Nintendo marathon.

And we're not talking Super Nintendo or the Wii here. I mean the actual 1985 NES, complete with Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt.

(Drew and I took it upon ourselves to hook the system up when no one was looking.)

Drew dominated both Super Mario and Emily's generic baseball game. I found that, with age, I moved across the screen with a bit more hesitation. I wasn't concerned over getting coins or mushrooms - I just didn't want to die.

Never was a big fan of the first Super Mario Bros. anyway. I always thought 2 and 3 (with the raccoon suit) were a lot more fun.

According to Wikipedia, the NES bundle package that came with the console, controllers, and Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt sold for $200 in 1988. So I guess an Xbox that sells for the same price today isn't so expensive after all?

The Playlist: Aerosmith

They’ve inspired the likes of Metallica, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses and Bon Jovi.

Their work has spawned 25 gold albums, four Grammys, and MTV Icon award, induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and a Hollywood actress that can speak Elvish.

Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer. They’re collectively known as the “Bad Boys of Boston” and “America’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band.” But you probably know them better as Aerosmith.

While I have yet to see Aerosmith in concert – and this late in the game, I’m not sure I would want to – I vividly remember being a middle schooler and falling asleep each night as the ‘Big Ones’ album played on my Walkman. I think that’s one of the few instances where learning by osmosis actually worked; I remember the lyrics to this day.

So here are my five favorite songs from one of my favorite bands growing up. Their career has spanned four decades; it should be interesting to see whether Steven Tyler’s lips decide to go solo one day.

Dream On (1973)

It was the highest-charting single from the band’s self-titled debut album and – along with ‘Sweet Emotion’ and ‘Walk this Way’ – has become one of a handful of their signature songs. The song, which could very well be one of the first ever power ballads, initially peaked at No. 59 on the Billboard charts but became a Top 10 hit when re-released in 1976. Younger readers probably know the song as being sampled by Eminem for his 2003 hit ‘Sing for the Moment.’

From the MTV 10th Anniversary Special (June 1991)

Eminem's 'Sing for the Moment' (2003)

Janie’s Got a Gun (1989)

Fresh from the success of their first sober album, 1987’s ‘Permanent Vacation,’ the band returned with ‘Pump’ two years later ushered in by this major hit. Inspired by a Newsweek article on gunshot victims, Tyler wrote the piece focusing on a young woman shooting and killing her father after being sexually abused. While controversial, it brought the band their first Grammy win and peaked at No. 4 on Billboard. The song was featured in the 2001 teen parody ‘Not Another Teen Movie’ and on ‘The Daily Show’ following the Feb. 2006 Dick Cheney hunting incident (though, of course, the lyrics were changed to ‘Cheney’s Got a Gun’).

Cryin’ (1993)

Another Top 20 hit, the song cemented the ‘Get a Grip’ album as a success while its video launched the career of a 17-year-old unknown actress by the name of Alicia Silverstone (‘Clueless,’ ‘Batman & Robin’). Silverstone would go on to star in the next two Aerosmith music videos – ‘Amazing’ and ‘Crazy’ – which earned her the brief title during the mid 90s of the ‘Aerosmith girl.’ In addition to Silverstone, the ‘Cryin’’ video also features appearances by actors Stephen Dorff and, of ‘Lost’ fame, Josh Holloway.

Angel (1988)

While most would easily guess the band’s biggest hit to date – 1998’s ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’ from the film ‘Armageddon,’ their sole No. 1 song – what would you think would be their second biggest chart-topper? It might surprise some but it’s actually another power ballad. ‘Angel’ reached No. 3 on Billboard. So what does that tell you? That for all the guitar-smashing songs that appeal to the male demographic, the most successful metal tunes are often for the ladies.

Livin on the Edge (1993)

As an 11-year-old just starting to watch MTV, I wasn’t quite sure what to think of a naked Steven Tyler in the music video, half covered in shadow. Or, for that matter, the random green man that jumps out of said shadow. But the video, while mildly disturbing, was epic enough to catch my attention and cause me to buy a whole bunch of their CDs. So I guess the plan worked, huh? The song is said to have been written as a response to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. And for fans of ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,’ keep an eye out in the video for Edward Furlong, the super annoying John Connor from ‘T2.’

PSN Prepares for Ramblewood Meeting

For those who haven't been following the paper lately, I recently started a series focusing on Ramblewood apartments - its past, present and the debate over its future. Ramblewood has a violent history but some are trying to improve the neighborhood while others want to do away with the property and level it to the ground.

Here are the stories to date:

Part 1 - Neighborhood at a Crossroads

Part 2 - Neighborhood in Crisis

Part 3 - Rumbling in Ramblewood

Part 4 - Police Respond to Ramblewood Debate

For those interested in chiming in on the debate, I received this e-mail last night from PSN leader Frank Cloyd...

Hello everyone,

Our regular monthly PSN MEETING will be MONDAY JAN. 28, 6 PM at CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH in the Fellowship Hall in the church basement. Please park in the parking lot at the rear of the church, and come in the back door. I will have signs directing you to the Fellowship Hall. Central United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Marion St. and Washington St. in Uptown Shelby. Don't be alarmed that our church signs are torn down -- we are beginning a big renovation of the church building.

Thanks to all of you our PSN target area is safer than it has been in 13 years. The big effort now is to continue to repopulate our area with law-abiding citizens, and to continue to establish a solid community. There is much to look forward to in PSN for 2008. Improvement to housing and infrastructure; increased church activities; and plans for other facilities.

As we prepare for our Jan. 28 meeting, there is strong support in our community to take action in Ramblewood. Let us all pray for divine guidance to reach unanimous agreement on our action. Several options have been publicly shown in Shelby Star and Cleveland Headline News. The purpose of our Monday Jan. 28 meeting is to respectfully discuss options for immediate action.

PROJECT SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS meeting participants have the power to independently initiate action. Following our meeting guidelines, all group actions have been and will be by unanimous consent. Everyone present has an equal vote and equal right to share your opinion. Any one person present may veto the proposed action of the entire group.

Our power is authorized by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, generally known as freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, right of the people peaceably to assemble, and right of the people to petition the Government. We must be willing to use these rights, stand up for these rights, demand these rights, fight for these rights, and to provide these rights to all citizens regardless of economic status or position in society. We must fight against undue influence or coercion by the powerful.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend our meeting.

Hope to see all of you at our PSN MEETING MONDAY JAN. 28, 6 PM at CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

Thanks,

Frank

A Blog that has Nothing to do with the Weather...

Stopped by Leatherwood's to kill some time on this rainy (and suddenly snowy) Saturday afternoon. The comic store, a 20-year fixture in uptown Shelby, only has a few more days before it closes its doors for good.
I grew up on comic books and while I haven't been too interested in them in probably 15 years, I spent at least an hour today digging through what remains at the store.
And in response to some comments posted about today's article on Leatherwoods - Nothing more than immature adults acting like kids...
Liking comic books or having childhood memories tied to comic books has no bearing on your maturity or whether you act like a kid. A Star city editor and two reporters (one being a girl) digging through comic book boxes this morning should be evidence enough of that.

Bizarro Karma

Made a walk across the street for lunch at El Acapulco. Always love passing this personalized warning sign, today partially covered by the ice and snow.

I was feeling generous and covered the $50 tab for all in our group. And what happens on the way out? Ice melts off a powerline and drops on my head.

What kind of bizarro karma is that?

Deadbeat Parents

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office website has been running the most wanted list for several months now. And what you've seen in the paper is nothing more than me stealing from that list. A Slushy Morning

The first thing I saw when I opened the door this morning ...

A little wet, a little slushy, but not nearly as bad as it could have been - or we prepared for.
While I'm usually at work at 8 anyway, when inclement weather is involved I feel the urge to make a Burger King run and load up on as many Croissanwiches as possible.

...Then I come to work and get hassled by Joy Scott over why I didn't get her one.

She guilts me into handing one of my two over only for her to walk back over moments later, drop it on my desk, and say "I don't like sausage."

Empty Shelves at Harris Teeter

This was the scene around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Wonder if you can buy stock in milk? I'd buy 100 shares right after the New Year. You can always count on that January / February snowstorm to clear the shelves at Harris Teeter.

The Playlist: Garbage

They tore through the rock scene of the mid 90s, offering grunge-style guitars, mixing, and “wall of sound” production quality as the backdrop for the angry, emotional and sultry lyrics of a red-headed Scot.

Their self-titled debut album and sophomore effort – ‘Version 2.0’ – sold millions and their songs were heavily featured in such films as ‘Big Daddy,’ ‘William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet,’ and the James Bond movie ‘The World is Not Enough.’

While Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker are currently on an indefinite hiatus as a band – the music (and music videos) of Garbage left an undeniable mark on the music industry.

This week I will take a look at my favorite five songs from a band that has been a personal favorite since I discovered them my senior year of high school.

Vow

I can't use what I can't abuse
And I can't stop when it comes to you
You burned me out but I'm back at your door
Like Joan of Arc coming back for more…

After catching some momentum from airplay on Los Angeles’ KROQ radio station, the band released ‘Vow’ as their debut single in mid 1995. It failed to make any waves on the charts – peaking at 97 on Billboard’s Hot 100 – but received strong reviews from critics and paved the way for the success of their debut album, which would go onto be certified 2x Platinum.
“[“Vow”] was one of the first tracks that we had musically,” according to Butch Vig. “The idea for it came from a newspaper article that I read about a woman who had gone back to get revenge on an abusive husband, so we thought it would be cool to get a bit of retribution in there.”
That woman was once rumored to be Lorena Bobbit.

Stupid Girl

You pretend you’re high
You pretend you’re bored
You pretend you’re anything
Just to be adored
And what you need
Is what you get…

“It became an anthem for a girl settling for less than what she wants or deserves,” Shirley Manson once said.
Using a drum sample from The Clash’s ‘Train in Vain,’ it was the band’s fourth single from their self-titled debut and is one of their biggest songs to date – peaking at No. 2 on the US Modern Rock charts. The song took in a Grammy in 1997 for ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group’ and its video earned the band ‘Best New Artist’ at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.
“People still ask us who the 'Stupid Girl' is,” said Vig, “and that's impossible to answer. The song is sort of meant to be a wake up call. It could be about an ex-girlfriend; it could be about a rock diva that we all know, it could be about your sister. It could also be called 'Stupid Boy'.”

You Look So Fine

I'm not like all the other girls
I can't take it like the other girls
I won't share it like the other girls
That you used to know…

It wasn’t released as a single in the US but the haunting, pseudo-obsessive closing song from ‘Version 2.0’ was a Top 20 hit overseas. According to reports, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston walked down the aisle to the song when they were married in 2000. Think maybe that had something to do with their breakup or was it all Angelina?
“I wrote it about someone I was madly in love with who unfortunately did not feel the same way about me,” said Manson.
“We had an idea that we wanted to break down the album and build it back up again,” said Vig. “We wanted something meditative and calming at the end. It's like The Carpenters, that rush of vocals.”

Only Happy When It Rains

I’m only happy when it rains
I’m only happy when it’s complicated
And though I know you cant appreciate it
I’m only happy when it rains
You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad
I’m only happy when it rains…

This may sound a little pessimistic but, the longer I work as a journalist, the more I realize this could very well be the theme song of the media world. After all, happy news rarely sells papers.
It was the band’s breakthrough hit in 1995 and has since been used in such TV shows as ‘The X-Files,’ ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ and ‘Crossing Jordan.’
“It's about the grunge attitude in America, which is a pretty morose attitude to have,” Manson said. “We were being pretty tongue-in-cheek. But it's also a song about wanting love, but knowing that life will always get in the way, and of knowing that, and yet not being obliterated by that. It's a song for people that know what it's like to live on the dark side.”

Push It

This is the noise that keeps me awake
My head explodes and my body aches
Push it, make the beats go harder
Push it, make the beats go harder…

What do you get when you throw the Beach Boys, Salt-N-Pepa and a whole bunch of dark, loud music into a blender? The first single from the highly-acclaimed ‘Version 2.0’ album.
Sampling both Brian Wilson’s ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ and the R&B ‘Push It,’ ‘Push It’ set the tone for the success of the band’s sophomore effort and its music video was one of the most critically acclaimed of 1998.
“On "Push It", it was how far can we go, to just get so intense,” Vig said. “The verses are slow and dreamy and pull you in, and then, of course, it gets very confrontational. The Beach Boys thing was a conscious thing, Shirley just came up with the lyric don't worry baby, and we wanted to try having a vocal chorus answering her. I think it was Steve who sampled the Beach Boys right off the record. So we had Shirley Manson singing and the Beach Boys answering her. It was amazing.”

That’s what I have for this week. Be sure to come back next Thursday for the next Playlist.

December's CrimeStoppers Meeting

This was e-mailed to me earlier this week by CrimeStoppers Secretary Karen Rhyne. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday at noon at Fidelity Bank. It is open to the public.

MINUTES FOR DECEMBER 17 CRIME STOPPERS MEETING

The monthly meeting of Crime Stoppers was held on Monday, December 17, 2007 at noon in the Alexander Conference Room.

President Gary Staymate called the meeting to order at 12:10pm and opened with a prayer.

Those present were: Gary Staymate, Charles McCloud, Karen Rhyne, Shell Byars, Kathryn Larson, Ellis Noell, Mark Brooks, Marlene Peeler, Jo Boggs, Johnny Hutchins, Tammy Endicott, Mike Putnam, Michael Chen and Durwin Briscoe.

The minutes were read and approved, after one correction to Phil Weather's first name being corrected from Bill.

Lt. Tammy Endicott reported that a total of 8 tips were received since our last meeting in November. A tip was called in regarding narcotics in a vehicle. The vehicle passed out of the city limits and then the county took over and an arrest was made for simple possession of marijuana. Members voted to pay the tipster $100. One tipster called twice regarding Cornelius Coleman. He was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance. Members voted to pay the tipster $400. Another tip was in regard to a person on the Most Wanted, but no arrest has been made. Other tips were in regard to a robbery at Pizza Hut, a drug offense and an armed robbery in Kings Mountain. There was one call into the county regarding drugs.

There were a total of 96 tips called in during 2007. A total of $4,150 was paid out.

Johnny Hutchins announced that he had spoken with David Dear concerning the CrimeStopper stickers and Mr. Dear had agreed to allow them to be placed on all marked county cars.

Charles McCloud brought up the subject of having some sort of ID to show that we are members of CrimeStoppers. Letters to show store managers and employees were also discussed. It would be appropriate to have some sort of ID to present when asking to place the CrimeStoppers stickers on their doors.

Mark Brooks inquired about who was working with starting a CrimeStoppers in our schools. Gary said that Don Allen was working with Phil Weathers. Jo Boggs mentioned that Rodney Borders would also be an excellent one to help with this endeavor. Don Allen had mentioned earlier that he felt high school was too late to reach the students and that they should be exposed to CrimeStoppers at least by the time they are in Middle School. Charles McCloud said he felt they should begin in Kindergarten.

Durwin Briscoe announced that the county is planning to begin a County Citizens Academy in February. The course will run for 10 weeks and CrimeStoppers will be part of the curriculum.

The next scheduled meeting will be on Martin Luther King Day, which is a state holiday. Members voted to move the next meeting up one week. The next CrimeStoppers meeting will be held on Monday January 14 at noon in the Alexander Conference Room. The Alexander Room will be where CrimeStoppers will meet during 2008.

President Gary Staymate adjourned the meeting at 1:10pm.

Ramblewood

There's been a lot of talk lately about what to do with Ramblewood.

The HUD apartment complex has been the site of a handful of high-profile crimes in recent years and some want to do away with it completely and bulldoze it to the ground.

Others believe Ramblewood has improved from what it once was and is on a path to becoming a much safe neighborhood.

Check out Sunday's Star for my first piece looking at the situation. More articles will follow next week. I've already spoken with a few residents, the property manager, the head of Shelby's Project Safe Neighborhood, and the police chief. Some pretty interesting perspectives thus far.

An Eventful Morning

I don't think anyone in the newsroom is a fan of working the early morning shift. You're at work at 5:30 or 6 a.m., you make some calls to see if anything happened overnight. And usually those calls are met with "It's been quiet."

It's a nice change when things aren't so quiet in the morning.

I had just gotten into work this morning - and was making those calls - when a report came over the scanner that a car had hit a house and the driver was unresponsive. It was 6:11 a.m.

Here are the photos I took after I made it to Davis Road in Patterson Springs. A partial story is already at shelbystar.com. A complete story should be available this afternoon.

It was dark but skid marks clearly showed how the car drove off the road and across the front yard before hitting the car port.
