The Playlist: Inspired by Lindsay Lohan

My new music column, as printed in today's Star...

Unless you've lived under a rock for the past two weeks, you've heard Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan is going through a tough time. Lohan, 21, was arrested July 24 for DUI and cocaine possession. And if that wasn't enough, her mugshot, scary as it was, made me have flashbacks to writing stories about meth busts here in Cleveland County. ...So sad.
With all that in mind, I thought I might use Ms. Lohan's legal troubles to have a little fun with this week's Playlist. So here are five songs the Mean Girls and Freaky Friday star might relate to.

Eric Clapton
Song: Cocaine
Album: Slowhand, 1977

"If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues / Cocaine / When your day is done and you wanna run / Cocaine"

Clapton has said this is actually a cleverly disguised anti-drug song. Maybe Lindsay took the lyrics literally?

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Song: Under the Bridge
Album: Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik, 1991

"(Under the bridge downtown) / is where I drew some blood / (Under the bridge downtown) / I could not get enough"

One of the Peppers' biggest hits to date, the song is an introspective by lead singer Anthony Keidis recalling his drug addiction. Here's some trivia: the music video was directed by Gus Van Sant, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his directing 1997's Good Will Hunting.

Jefferson Airplane
Song: White Rabbit
Album: Surrealistic Pillow, 1967

"One pill makes you larger / And one pill makes you small / And the ones that mother gives you / Don't do anything at all"

The popular LSD-inspired song makes parallels between drug effects and the imagery in 'Alice in Wonderland.' Bet you didn't know the bass line in the song was also used in Madonna's "Material Girl."

The Eagles
Song: Life in the Fast Lane
Album: Hotel California, 1976

"They knew all the right people / They took all the right pills / They threw outrageous parties / They paid heavenly bills"

The song peaked at #11 in the US and is reported to be about the relationship between Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

Amy Winehouse
Song: Rehab
Album: Back to Black, 2007

""They try to make me go to rehab / And I say no, no, no"

One of the most successful songs of the summer, 'Rehab' was written after Winehouse, 23, refused to seek treatment for alcoholism. Winehouse has said she did go but only stayed 15 minutes.
You need to go to rehab, Lindsay. Go. Go. Go.

There's my list. Got one of your own? Shoot me an e-mail at grahamcawthon@shelbystar.com and I might use it in a future column.
